Making myself accountable

I tend to accumulate genealogy data more quickly than I enter it in my database. I was going to say "than I can enter it" but I know that isn't true! I want to keep a check on myself that I am at least entering new information as I gather it, and preferably catching up on some of the long overdue data entry! There's a folder on my hard drive that contains various digital bits and pieces that I haven't yet entered into my database.

Right now, there are 190 files in the folder, sorted into 25 sub-folders.

This doesn't include all the email correspondence that I have yet to act on, or the many photocopied pages (not relating to my direct line) kindly sent to me by other researchers.

I will post my progress from time to time. It may not make for interesting reading, but perhaps it will keep me motivated to sort out my information!

  1. Perhaps you need some sort of goal that you can be held accountable for achieving, like one file per week, or everything for one family in a month? I know I would! It's often not enough to say you're going to do it, you have to say what and when.
    Good luck!

  2. Good point. For now I'll just say that I will check the total on around the first of each month, and will accept no change in any particular month as a reasonable outcome, but aim for clearing 5 files per month.

  3. I have the same 'holding bay' of stuff to enter, although it sounds like you have much more than me to enter. I need to be in the mood to add heaps of stuff and then i will go for it. I do give priority to my paternal line and every-now-and-then i will add those off this line. Any email images/information i get i try and add that straight away then its done.

Shelly, plan ahead if possible - set aside 30 mins/1hr knowing that you will only enter those 190 files that you still have to do and dont get sidetracked.

Keep going and keep chipping away at the backlog.
